Qwic-Pic: Penhaligon's Mook

Feb02

Hi!

When I read Iris' earlier post about a Penhaligon's Mook being released in Japan in January 2012, I was determined to get my hands on it so I kept my eyes peeled for it. It recently arrived at Kinokuniya and I picked it up yesterday afternoon (there were still several copies left).

It is so unfortunate that I don't understand a word of Japanese script and all I can do is thumb through the pictures, which include fragrance directory complete with scent descriptions (I presume) and top, heart and base note details.

It also contains pictures of their vintage posters which also adorn the Penhaligon's boutique

Nonetheless, there are some features of the mook that are useful. For instance, The Fragrance Floors Of Penhaligon's, is a nifty little chart that categorises fragrances according to their types for a quick reference - if you're say looking for a Chypre (characterised by an accord composed of citrus top-notes, a floral heart note and a base-note derived from oak moss and musks) in an Eau de Toilette, the chart tells you that Jubilee Bouquet and Eau Sans Pareil are the 2 fragrances that belong to those to categories. An Aromatic fragrance in the same Eau de Toilette category would be Juniper Sling (click HERE for my review on Juniper Sling)

There is also a History chart that chronicles which fragrance was created in which year - Hammam Bouquet is listed as the first fragrance created in 1872, which is really amazing to know since Hammam Bouquet is still one of the fragrances that popularly retails today.

Another bit of information in the mook - Blenheim Bouquet, created in 1902, was created for Winston Churchill's father, Lord Randolph and was also a fragrance favoured by Mr Churchill himself (it is named after Blenheim Palace, Lord Randolph's residence).

With a history as rich as this, it is a real pleasure to be able to own and indulge in products from this fragrance house, which still bear the original and iconic insignia.

The pouches that come with the Penhaligon's mook are special to me for a couple of reasons.

First, the colour palette and the design is practically identical to the walls of the Penhaligon's Boutique - a rich chocolate-eggplant with dozens of the iconic fragrance labels all over.

The pouch is amazingly well-made - its probably one of the most well-made pouches I've bought (in terms of mooks; the other favourite is my HBG wallet). The pouch is made of good satiny material and thickly lined such, that it feels plush. The interior features a beautiful satiny lining in the same shade. I am tempted to carry all my makeup in it (how protected it all will be!) but the larger pouch is a tad big for everyday use.

Finally, the little coral bow that is sewn on the pouches - it is almost the exact same shade of coral that is on my first-ever bottle of Penhaligon's fragrance, Ellenisia. I love how they all look so pretty together.

At SGD$36.70 (10% off with the Kinokuniya card), its not the most inexpensive mook. However, given the quality of the pouches and how a pouch in such a print would likely be unavailable for purchase elsewhere/otherwise, I totally didn't mind shelling out for it. These will be appreciated and definitely well-used :)

Edit: Mag has also purchased the Penhaligon's mook - head over HERE to see what she has to say :)
