Review: Smashbox Photofinish Hydrating Foundation Primer - This One Is A Keeper!

Dec17

Hello!

I've been using the Smashbox Photofinish Hydrating Foundation Primer for almost 2 months and I really like it - well, I like it so much that I bought a second tube (the first one is almost all gone!)

Smashbox recently revamped its range of primers and added 2 new variants - the Hydrating Primer and Luminizing Primer. I tried both and I really liked how the Hydrating Primer works and I'd like to share my thoughts with you.

Smashbox Says

  • The Hydrating Primer aims to boost moisture in the skin while also smoothing out the skin for a clean, even canvas for foundation to go on and sit comfortably - it aims to extend the wear-time of makeup.
  • It contains HYDRAPLEX - an extract from a desert plant
  • The formula boosts hydration in skin and then locks in that moisture with a protective barrier for smooth, even skin
  • The formula is oil-free and lightweight

My Thoughts

Texture: I've used a variety of primers - the mousse versions (Shu Uemura UV Underbase Mousse), the creamier types (MAC Prep+Prime) and the gel-like versions (MUFE All Mat). However, the texture of the Smashboxis rather different from all of these - it feels more like a light gel-creme - smooth, cool, refreshing.

It also has none of the slip and glide silicone-based primers have, despite containing silicones (Dimethicone, Stearyl Dimethicone, Dimethicone Crosspolymer). The selling point of silicone-based primers is that the slip makes foundation glide on effortlessly. Despite the gel-creme texture, I find that Smashbox Hydrating Primer does exactly the same, only with a more natural, comfortable feel.

In terms of hydration, I find that it delivers ample hydration and yet, does not feel like a heavy moisturising product that just sits on skin. In fact, I find that using this together with a heavier texture sunblock (either Biore or MAC) provides sufficient hydration for me. This helps eliminates the number of products I apply under my foundation (too many products just makes everything slip and slide when I get the oilies or perspire).

Scent: It almost has this very light earthy, woodsy fragrance - it reminded me of bamboo

Colour: Its blue but not to worry, it does not colour correct (at least not on me!).

And how does it hold up?

On the day these shots were taken, I applied my makeup around 4pm in the afternoon, met up with Mag and we ran some errands in town (I picked up the China Glaze treatments at Flea @ Scape!), had dinner in Takashimaya and then we zoomed off to the Airport to stroll around and have ice-cream. It was 1+am by the time I got home. The entire time, I blotted my face ONCE after dinner and I touched up with pressed powder around the nose and upper lip. The rest of the time, I was either driving or getting something done.

See, I even forgot to re-apply lipstick (abnormal!)! We were in and out of aircon and open air places - I DID get oily, the foundation DID wear off around the T-zone and upper lip a little - but its mostly intact and even. What I appreciate most is that despite perspiring, my foundation didn't pool on my upper lip (which used to happen with some other primers).

I also like to believe that the foundation plays a big part (I'm still using my Clarins Skin Illusion + Estee Lauder Double Wear 2:1 ratio combination) and the oil-busting skin-smoothing face washes and toners I'm using also contributes to the longevity of the makeup.

However, the Smashbox Hydrating Primer's selling point for me is that I do find that my makeup really does last much longer even on yuckily hot, long days and remains more even - I've tried the same foundation combination with different primers and the wear-time wasn't as long. I also don't feel afraid to be a little generous with my sunblock because the texture is so light and refreshing - being generous with sunblock is always good! :)

The Smashbox Hydrating Primer retails at SGD$75 for a 30ml squeeze tube - my first tube is almost finished and that lasted me from the 2nd week of October to (around) 3rd week of December - really pretty reasonable.

If you're oilies-and-perspiration-prone and are afraid of layering on too many skincare products before your foundation, you might want to take a look at the Smashbox Hydrating Foundation Primer - I really like it and so glad I managed to buy a second tube! (Thanks Gwen for the Beauty.com spree!)

I just tried this too! Interestingly enough, over at Sephora the 30ml tube is $68 while the 15ml travel sized tube is just $28. (doesn't make sense at all to me!!)

Babe, I realized how kuku I sound. HAHA. Made a small mistake, the 30ml / 15ml travel tube is only the normal one, I saw the Hydrating one at the ION Sephora but there's no 15ml travel tube for that!

(Il find the normal one really good - good enough for me! And the travel tube was just too reasonable when you compare the prices for the 2 diff sizes!)

Evonzz: Oooh, no lah, no kuku! :P a lot of people complain that the original one breaks them out. I like this one cos it really dusn't have that siliconey feeling!
