SHOWCASE: ANNA SUI FORBIDDEN AFFAIR FRAGRANCE

Sep27

Hulllooooooo!

ANNA SUI will be releasing, FORBIDDEN AFFAIR, a new fragrance in Oct 2010, which includes the Eau de Toilette / Eau de Parfum fragrances, a shower gel and body lotion.

INSPIRATION & DESIGN

As with all Anna Sui fragrances, the concept behind the fragrance is whimsical and fairy-tale like - according to Anna Sui, the fragrance was inspired by old German fairytale Snow White, Baroque and Rococo gardens, lavish, palatial luxury and boudoirs.  Every part of the fragrance, from the name, the design on the box, the design of the bottle, the fragrance and the technology behind it all fit into this theme.

The box itself tells a story - that the lovers meet behind an ornate palace gate, in a garden full of roses-in-bloom ....

The design of the bottle is inspired by a handheld ornate mirror - as with all Anna Sui fragrances, the bottles are rather attractive and have loads of intricate details (my favourite bottle-designs of all the Anna Sui fragrances [including the scent itself] must be the FLIGHT OF FANCY! So pretty!).  These are really the type of bottles you want to display on your vanity, rather than stash away in a fragrance drawer (I keep all my fragrances in a drawer).  The bottle cap also ties in with the theme of blossoming romance - it is reminiscent of a blooming flower (while the reccuring image of the rose is key, as in all Anna Sui products, I personally was reminded of a lotus flower when I saw the cap - but that's just me :P)

And the perfume itself is VIOLET-coloured and its not the bottle that is coloured. So if you're like me, in that you spray your fragrances on your clothes, you might want to take note of this (I can't spray fragrances directly on my skin, with the exception of my arms - it tends to sting and burn in other places, like my hairline, neck, decolletage, etc)

SCENT

According to Anna Sui:

TOP NOTES: LEMON, RED CURRANT, BLACK CURRANT

HEART NOTES: RASPBERRY, ROSE PETAL ACCORD, POMEGRANATE

BASE NOTES: VIOLET, CEDARWOOD, MUSK

Also, the fragrance was formulated with CLYCLODEXTRIN TECHNOLOGY - this technology allows the first fresh top note to "re-burst" over and over again so that instead of a dry-down that dominates, the wearer is supposed to experience the the freshness of the fragrance continously.

Personally ......

  • I do pick-up the berry notes (from the red and black currant and the raspberry) but the most prominent notes to me (and on my skin), were really the ROSE and VIOLET scents.  I did notice that the dry-down was a little musky but the musk scent doesn't seem to dominate.  In fact, my nose was a little confused - when I initially sprayed it, I thought, "ok, so this is a fruity-rose scent" ... then a few minutes later, I thought, "nope, its violet" ... then I couldn't decide whether the rose or violet was more prominent.

  • Also, seeing that it had "sparkling fruity accords", I was expecting a sweet, sweet fragrance - instead, I thought it was a little more powdery and intense.  In fact, I found that FORBIDDEN AFFAIR was a little more powdery (owing to the violet notes) and strong than a lot of fragrances I currently wear (which are mostly florals like gardenia, freesia, lily, peach blossoms, jasmine or sweet caramel honeys)

  • While I cannot say I can think of any other fragrance that's smells similar to this, if you're looking for some kind of a reference point, I would say that the violet notes reminded me a little of MARC JACOB's SPLASH in VIOLET while the fruity-rose notes reminded me a little of the L'Occitane Rose 4 Reines EDT I purchased many moons ago ... if Violet and Rose 4 Reines indulged in a liaison dangereuse, perhaps FORBIDDEN AFFAIR might be their baby??? (pun totally unintended!).

  • Also, surprisingly, for an EDT (I received a 50ml EDT sample), I found FORBIDDEN AFFAIR rather long-wearing - I usually stay away from EDTs given that (1) I don't quite like how the alcohol smell sometimes dominates in certain fragrances and (2) Eau de Parfums are much stronger and long-lasting.  However, 2 squirts of FORBIDDEN AFFAIR lasted a good 5-6 hours, without changing too dramatically - I could still detect the rose and violet scents on my skin after all that time.  That said, for me, 2 squirts was really more than enough.
