SHINE, SHIMMER & SPARKLE

Hello!

A quick post just to showcase one of the newest Illusion D'Ombres from Chanel - Apparition. Apparition was one of 2 new Illusion D'Ombres that premiered with Chanel's Blue Illusion Collection recently (click HERE for collection details and feature of Le Vernis in Sky Line).

Apparition is the deeper smokier shade of the two new Illusion D'Ombres and is described as an "intense greyish blue" by Chanel's Creative Director Peter Philips.

Like I've mentioned in other posts, I tend not to use the Illusion D'Ombres on their own - given that these often have a glimmering effect to them, I prefer patting or smoothing some on either on the whole eyelid or on the centre of the eyelid (where the iris would be) for a little pop. 

I was looking at my blue eyeshadows to pair it with - here are a couple of comparisons to show you how Apparition compares with some other deep blues.

I picked out Sephora Jumbo Liner 12 HR Wear Waterproof Crayon in Marine, Inglot 428 Pearl and L'Oreal Colour Infallible in All Night Blue. I picked these because these are the deeper (less bright) blues in my stash.

At first I thought L'Oreal Colour Infallible in All Night Blue would be the closest to Apparition - apparently, I was wrong. All Night Blue is far more blue than Apparition and has brighter blue microshimmer in it. Sephora Jumbo Liner in Marine and Inglot P428 are also far more vibrant and bluer in comparison.

Apparition has a much smokier base - at the edges of the swatch which is a touch sheered out, you can see that the base is more of a deep charcoal grey rather than a navy or indigo. Looking at the photos now, I'd say it has a "dark-wash denim" tone to it. The paler silvery-greyish shimmer in it gives it an edge - it catches the light at particular angles, making Apparition glimmer, where it otherwise smoulders.

The swatch you see above is a relatively heavy swatch. Among my other Illusion D'Ombres, I use Graphite (khaki-pewter with gold glimmer) and Vision (gold glimmer) the most - in comparison, Apparition feels a touch more wet and slightly sheerer, requiring a slightly more heavy hand for it to show up more opaquely. Layering does not seem much of a problem, thankfully - it goes on smoothly when patted over or smoothed with my finger tip. To this end, I had on this look for more than 9 hours (from about 2pm to about 11pm) - there was no creasing, flaking, smudging or fall out.

I can't remember if the new Illusion D'Ombres are permanently available  though.

I'm not googling and keeping abreast of the upcoming collections for now - I don't want to get caught up in it like I always do. So far, the only Holiday collection I've taken a peek at is Guerlain's Holiday 2012 and I like what I see!

After a VERY long time, I finally found a foundation that I can use on its own - no mixing of shades required and I'm very very very pleased with it! My new current favourite, Burberry Beauty's Sheer Foundation.

Burberry Beauty has 13 shades of the Luminous Liquid Foundation (all 13 shades are available at Tangs Orchard) - I am using shade No. 10. For reference, I am around NC43-45 in MAC. In the case of Burberry Beauty, at least for the deeper shade of foundation, I found that No.10 seemed a little lighter and more yellow/orange than No.9 which came off as a darker red-brown on my skin tone. I thought No.10 would be a tad light looking at the swatch but it blends out to match my skintone well.

The bottle is a sturdy square shaped bottle and comes outfitted with a pump

The pump delivers small amounts of foundation - the shot below shows 1 pump of foundation

That pearl of foundation in the shot above shows you the thick, cream texture of the foundation - it's perhaps one of the most dense-textured foundation I've come across recently. It has a lush, creamy texture when blended out on skin - I love using a brush for this (I currently use a foundation brush from Becca - upcoming entry!)

Here is what I love about the Burberry Sheer Foundation:

• It is creamy and spreads very evenly across skin for a smooth, even complexion.

• It has buildable coverage - I'd say despite the "Sheer Foundation" name, it has medium coverage and you can layer a little more if you'd like. I still need to use a bit of concealer on the more prominent spots I have but it really evens out everything.

• I also find that the foundation does not oxidise and turn darker or ashy as the hours go by

• The creamy texture does not cake or break down, even with an attack of the oilies and perspiration

• It has an amazing scent - like luxe makeup fragrance (you know like how YSL makeup has that distinct scent?) - a little creamy floral.

• It keeps skin hydrated - among the ingredients is SQUALENE - which is used as a skin hydrator in cosmetics. 

• It also contains ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE - (an ingredient found in suncreens) which protects skin from sunlight as well as preserves the integrity of the product in the packaging.

Burberry calls it a "Luminous Fluid Foundation" - it aims to give skin a natural radiance by "allowing optimum light diffusion for a naturally luminous complexion" - I agree - the foundation definitely creates a glowy, dewy look. The emollient texture, the light diffusing properties (it's NOT shimmer) and the hydrating texture create a glowy, dewy visage. 

Given the cream. emollient texture and the hydrating properties of this foundation, as well as taking into consideration how I tend to perspire and get oily fast, I found that the best primer for me to use with the Burberry Sheer Foundation is the Smashbox Photofinish Hydrating Primer - my 3rd tube! (see my review on the Smashbox Primer HERE)

I'm also using it in the shot taken at the Pink Dot Picnic HERE - it was a sweltering afternoon and despite blotting away oil and perspiration, the foundation held up pretty well.

At SGD$77, this falls into more of a high-end price range - considering how MAC hovers around the high $40s while Laura Mercier, Shu Uemura, Estee Lauder and Bobbi Brown hover around in the $50s.

That said, I'm truly happy with this foundation - it is very frustrating to have to keep mixing foundations daily to get that one shade I need for most of my face (I do play around with foundation shades for contouring and shading when I have the time) - imagine having to eyeball the correct ratio often (if there's no pump!). So for the shade accuracy alone, I'm totally pleased.

To top it off, the creamy smooth texture, the easy blending, the glowy, dewy look it creates together with skin-loving ingredients and the good wear-time, makes this a great foundation in my stash. I love the other ones I use too but this is one of my current favourites.

I NEED to do this .. I NEED to use all my eyeshadow palettes which I've been buying buying buying because they look so pretty and feel so good ... I've used them occasionally but they need to be used and showcased more often!

That's not the entire lot - there's more from where THAT came from ....

So I thought I'd do Palettes-A-Plenty - where I shall use and focus on the virtues of one palette (multi-shade, quint, quad or duo) in each entry. I'm starting off this series with one of the palettes I reach for pretty often - Guerlain Ecrin 4 Couleurs Les Aquas which premiered for Guerlain Spring 2012.

A sleek gold compact encases 4 complementary eyeshadows in slate grey (satin finish), deep cobalt  (shimmer), golden aqua (shimmer) and silver (high-shine frost). 

I love how the aqua shade has such a golden tone about it - it makes this an amazing shade to blend with gold. The shimmer is also not too dominant so I like using it in the outer crease and blend the gold highlight shade into it. 

My favourite is of course the blue - it is rich and deep but there's a brightness about it too - it has blue pearl in it that gives it some oomph when worn. 

All the 4 eyeshadows in this palette can be worn either dry or wet - I prefer using them w a damp brush because it just makes the colours pop a little more. Using them with a damp brush does not leave a wet spot on the eyeshadow.

I just wanted to point out the weight of the newer packaging - although the older quads have smaller compacts and smaller looking eyeshadow pans (like Bronze Doré on the left), both the new and old palettes weigh in at a hefty 7.2gms - each individual eyeshadow in the quad is a generous 1.8gm.

Among all the new palettes I have, I reach for this a little more often - I've gotten a couple of people asking me what eyeshadow I'm using when I wear this out. More often than not, I use the deep blue and aqua combination, although I've used the silver and slate grey occasionally.

In this look, I've done exactly that - I focused more on the blue and aqua shades, keeping the look Les Aquas :)

See the blue pearl in the deep blue shade? It reflects light beautifully. And I love how the aqua blends into the gold.

I've used this palette with both deeper and lighter lipsticks and I think both work well.

I really love Les Aquas - for someone like me, who loves blues, Les Aquas is a great combination of shades although one part of me wishes the slate grey was more of a shimmer or frost finish as opposed to a satin finish. Nonetheless, all the 4 shades in this palette are immensely workable - smooth, pigmented and the blues are gorgeous. 

I've been swatching and you know what? Guerlain Ecrin 4 Couleurs Les Gris is very very pretty also ... #justsaying.

I've been using the recently launched Guerlain Shine Automatique in #263 A La Parisienne for a little while and I wanted to share with you my thoughts on it. 

The idea behind Shine Automatique is bold colour that is sheer - a little of a contradiction yes? But that is exactly what Guerlain wanted to achieve - the idea of vibrant, joyful hues in a crystalline, sparkling formula for a luminous, brilliant pout.

And Guerlain wants this bouquet of luminous kisses to be loved by everyone - Shine Automatique is available in a 4 different shade families of Red, Orange, Pink, and Beige - a shade for every season, time of the day and mood.

Let's look at some random swatches of the shades available

See the way it catches and reflects light? I love the reds - I think these glossy, crystalline reds are a great way to wear a red without feeling the full on force of a red lipstick which can sometimes feel intimidating. 

I like the packaging - a sleek gold tube which you can open and close with just one finger.

I know - the swatches above look a tad sheer for a lipstick that looks so bright in the tube so I too was wondering how it would look on my lips. My upper lip is slightly more pigmented than my lower lip so very sheer lipsticks need more work on me.

Eyes: GA ETK in Obsidian Black & Madre Perla

Cheeks: MAC Fleur Power & Guerlain Cruel Gardenia

I'm using A La Parisienne (#263) which is the iconic shade in the range - it is a warm pink that borders on red although it looks scarily fuchsia in the tube. 

I'm using it on its own, only having lined the outer rim of my lips, like I do with the rest of my lipsticks. It covers the deeper pigmentation on the upper lip well, as well as the freckle on my lower left lip. So I totally get Guerlain's point of having colour as well as that crystalline sheerness - which is a refreshing change from the much thicker, opaque lipsticks I always reach for.

Here's what I like about the lipstick:

• It has adequate pigmentation to cover my natural lip shade evenly

• It applies smoothly without any grit despite it having micro-sparkles

• It feels really soft on lips - it doesn't cake or feel like a layer

• The colour can be layered on for greater intensity

• It doubles up as a glossy topper over other lipsticks

• It has the crystalline shine of gloss but it is NOT STICKY at all

• I love the one-finger operational packaging - works fab in restrooms where there's no place to put your bag down and fumble with everything

• It has a classic "lipstick" scent but it doesn't bother me and goes away after a while

Maybe this isn't even a point of contention - it lasted through a meal for me. But ALL my lipsticks last through meals for me - which irritates my Mom and Amy especially, to no end. I often don't really have to reaply lipstick after a meal - think it's just the way I eat. Well, unless its burgers :P

One thing I must add - because of the high level of shine and micro-sparkles, you MUST exfoliate and moisturise your lips before wearing the lipstick - the glimmer will highlight chapped and flaky skin which isn't what we want.

The only one thing that isn't so friendly is the price - it retails at SGD$51, and is slightly more expensive than Chanel and Dior but Guerlain is unapologetically luxurious and a treat. 

I'm really eyeing the red - I think it was #220 that I liked - but I swore that I will finish at least 3/4 of some other lipstick in my stash before I think of buying another so #220 (or is it #221? Now I'm not sure) will have to wait. Perhaps as a Diwali or Christmas present for myself? :P

Benefit premiered it's range of liquid foundations recently - the Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Brightening makeup range.

The range spans 9 different shades, with about 3 shades each, devoted to fair, medium and deep skintones.

The foundation is touted as a light to medium coverage foundation that provides a luminous visage

So what is the Oxygen Wow complex?

The Oxygen Wow Complex contains a number of skin-loving ingredients, like Vitamin C and E, Minerals from Seawater and Amino Acids - so that your skin gets a dose of skincare while you're wearing makeup.

The French-made formula is oil-free and is designed for all skintypes

Let's take a closer look at the foundation.

The closest match for my skintone was Amber. This is the 3rd deepest shade in the range (there are 2 more deeper than this). For reference, I am NC43-45 in MAC. I'm not sure what's up with my skintone but it seems to have cleared out a little - I find myself needing to adjust my foundation to a slightly lighter tone these few weeks (the current combination of Laura Mercier Moisture Supreme Foundation in Golden Beige and Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation in Warm Bronze suddenly seems a tad too brown on me). 

So I've tried Benefit's Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow in Amber on its own a couple of times and it was just a shade too deep on me. I've also tried it with a drop of LM Golden Beige for colour accuracy. In both cases, I didn't feel any difference in the texture or wear of the foundation.

I really appreciate Benefit creating a good variety of colours - the deeper shades are done well and have a good mix of orange / yellow tones that deeper skintones often require. And on top of that, I'm very very glad that Benefit Singapore brought in all the shades available :)

In the shot above, I pumped one pump of foundation out and tilted my hand and look at the flow - the foundation is smooth, rather viscous and light, just like Benefit mentioned.

To be honest, I didn't like Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow the first time I used it - the light texture was precisely what made me dislike it a little. Given that it's light and meant to give light to medium coverage, it didn't do much for my spotty skin and I declared it a foundation only meant for already good and flawless skin - I found myself needing a touch more concealer to cover my spots and blemishes. And because I was annoyed that the spots were showing, I didn't pay attention to anything else about the foundation.

Recently, my skin has cleared up a bit and I gave it a go again - I actually quite like it. I still think that the light to medium coverage requires a somewhat clear complexion. That said, here's what I like about it:

• the smooth texture glides on skin and blends very easily

• it feels light and a little cooling as I apply the foundation

• it works well with both a foundation brush or fingers 

• I can layer it on a little more on problem areas like my chin for a little more coverage 

• It doesn't make my skin oilier than other foundations; it also doesn't break down in patches as I perspire or blot away oil (that could likely be due to my primer too)

To be honest, I would really love if there was a fuller coverage version of the foundation so I don't have to worry about concealing my spots. Ok, actually, the smarter thing to want is for all the spots to completely go away (we're getting there I hope!). 

That said, I think this is a nice foundation - the light texture, the easy way it spreads and glides on skin as well as how smooth it feels makes this a nice lighter alternative to the more full-on coverage foundations I have in my stash.

I came across the Positively Teal Campaign while looking for something and I remembered my chum Jerlaine alerting me to it sometime back too. As with the Earth Day campaign, I thought it would be a lovely way to show solidarity with the movement and spread the word, with a little series on the blog - The Teal Files will showcase teal-coloured makeup, nail lacquers and whatever else teal I can find :) It helps that Teal is one of my favourite shades too!

In this first installment of The Teal Files, I showcase a teal pigment and liquid eyeliner

The soft teal-green pigment, Sea Breeze is from Make Up Store's Coral Collection for Summer 2012. Teal Mania liquid eyeliner from LA Splash has been on my radar for a long time and I finally picked it up this week!

For the teal to pop, I used a deep navy blue on the lid - for that, I chose L'Oreal Infallible in All Night Blue. I applied Sea Breeze to the outer crease and blended it into my highlight. I drew a slightly thicker winged eyeliner and then lined the lower lashline (underneath the lashes) with Teal Mania.

And here is the whole look ...

I like pairing Teals with pinks for lips and cheeks. On my cheeks, I used Illamasqua Hussy Powder Blush and Bobbi Brown Shimmebrick in Rose Gold. And for the lips, I used MAC Mehr lipstick, topped off with Chanel Glossimer in Mica (131).

Apparently, I did and I should be ashamed of myself.

16 weeks ago, well according to my Instagram feed at least, I purchased a couple of Bobbi Brown products and then I packed them away somewhere and promptly forgot about it - after taking photos of the products, I had grand plans of wanting to do some overview of the Bobbi Brown eyeshadows and Shimmerbricks I had and together with these new products, I packed my Bobbi Brown customisable palette away too (why, I don't know). I recently bought that jet-black eyeshadow, Charcoal, from Bobbi Brown and wanted to fit it in the palette and of course it wasn't in the eyeshadow drawer - and a massive hunt finally unearthed these. 

The shimmerbrick - Rose Gold - was one of 2 shimmerbricks from the Rose Gold Collection (the other was Wild Rose if I remember correctly).

5 strips of tawny rose shot through with pale gold - overall, it is not the warmest rose gold shade but the glow it creates is amazing. I have a couple of Bobbi Brown Shimmerbricks - Gold, Rose, Apricot, Party (I want Nectar too, actually) and they all create a really lovely glow if used with a light-enough hand. That 10.3gm of product also lasts the longest time - Rose was my first Shimmerbrick and I've used it a great lot but no sign of a dip at all.

Along with the Rose Gold Shimmerbrick, I picked up an old love - eyeshadow in Rose Gold. Rose Gold eyeshadow is not part of the Rose Gold Collection but I purchased it because (1) it's a very soft, pretty colour and (2) it was one of my first Bobbi Brown eyeshadows (when it was in the round packaging!) and I actually FINISHED it way back.

Rose Gold eyeshadow is a soft golden pink - it works well with a lot of colours and I like pairing it with browns, blacks and blues.

I paired Rose Gold and Charcoal Eyeshadow for a similar take on the smoky eye I featured in the MUFE Aqua Shadow entry HERE. Like in that look, I used the MUFE Aqua Shadow in 0E (black) and 28E (coppery peach) as the eyeshadow bases and applied the eyeshadows on top.

Here is the complete look. For the cheeks, I sheered out a little Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Calypso Coral as a base and then swirled the Rose Gold Shimmerbrick on top as a blush.

I'm so glad I picked up the Rose Gold Shimmerbrick and the eyeshadow - I'm not too sure if the Rose Gold Shimmerbrick is still available at the counters since it was sometime ago. But I will say this - if you are a fan of softer shades for the eyes, you should really take a look at Rose Gold Eyeshadow!
