SHOWCASE: MAC SPRING / SUMMER 2011 TRENDS - LOOKS & MAKEUP BREAKDOWNS FOR INSPIRATION!

Jan24

Hello!

In this post, I thought I'd include MAC's recommendation of what are the MAC products in the "kit" of each of the 4 trends.  In addition, I'm posting shots of some looks that were featured on the fashion runways.  A combination of both regular and MAC PRO products were used in the looks.  If you're looking for some ideas on how to incorporate the Spring Summer 2011 trends into your makeup routine, I thought these just might come in handy.

These shots were compiled into a binder and was part of the kit we received at the event - when I was handed the binder, I was told this was my "makeup bible" for this season :P

For easy reference, I'm just highlighting the names of products that are more easily accessible (like permanent or LE items that we've seen recently)

SHOWCASE: MAC SPRING / SUMMER 2011 TRENDS - DEMOS + SNEAK PEEK OF MAC'S WONDER WOMAN COLLECTION + ROMERO'S FAVE MAC PRODUCTS!

Jan24

Hi!

Last week, I was fortunate enough to attend MAC's SS11 Trend Presentation held at the National Museum of Singapore. This was a first for me and an eye-opener :)

The beauty mantra for this season - "brave statements, experimental textures, handsome femininity" and artistry

The Trends Presentation was helmed by the suave and very affable ROMERO JENNINGS, a SENIOR ARTIST from the MAC PRO TEAM in North America - Romero has been doing makeup for A QUARTER OF A CENTURY - 25 years (!!!) and has been with MAC for 17 years already.  His makeup mantra is a perfect match for this season's trends - he strives to be innovative and is constantly on the lookout for new and creative ways to use makeup.  Romero has worked with celebrities like Tim Gunn, Cindy Lauper, Ciara, Solange Knowles, Mary. J Blige and has also been involved in Editorials in international magazines such as Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and Glamourous.

I couldn't help notice that Romero has a wonderful complexion - it looked smooth, luminous and practically perfect *keels over in envy* ... and its a nice shade too! LOL!

TRENDS & DEMONSTRATIONS:

There are a total of 4 key trends in for Spring / Summer 2011 - POP-CLASSIC, ICE-DREAM, RAW-FINED and TERRA-COPPER - notice all the names of the trends are hyphenated and in some sense contrasting? Take RAW-FINED for instance - it conjures up images of RAW, NUDE, BARE and yet, REFINED and POLISHED.  Likewise for ICE-DREAM - ICY, COOL, PALE and yet, SOFT, DREAMY, FEMININE?

I think this leaves much room for personal interpretation on the trends which might make it accessible for everyone and not just a look that is restricted to the fashion runways or magazine editorials.

Let's take a look at some aspects of the demonstrations:

POP-CLASSIC

POP-CLASSIC comes across as feminine but with an edgier vibe - the trend is inspired by the fashion idea of "colour blocking" and translating it on a complexion that is illuminated and yet low-key. Super saturated colours in a variety of textures were seen (mostly focused on one part of the face like eyes or lips) balanced off by clean, fresh complexions.

Here the the model sported intense blue eyeshadow (the TV monitor somehow reflected it as purple) and to both contrast and complement the blue eyeshadow, Romero applied lashings of GREEN mascara - Opulash in ARMY OF AMAZON, from the upcoming Wonder Woman Collection.

Then Romero next applied Cream Colour Base in PEARL along the tops of the model's cheekbones and down her nose-bridge, which made her softly radiant.

*******************************************************************************

ICE-DREAM

ICE-DREAM features pastel shades but used in a much more punked-up, avant-garde way - the result is chic, futuristic-mod looks that incorporate delicate shades like lilacs, lemon, pistachio and marshmallow, with an emphasis on textures like mattes or glosses. Again, these colours are complemented by a complexion that is clean, fresh and perfected with gentle takes of nudes and taupes.  Rather than the innocent "bridal" type freshness, these are feminine looks that have an edgy bite.

For this look, Romero created a lovely deep lilac eye on the model - not just with a plain simple lilac eyeshadow but an ingenious combination of blue eyeshadows and fuschia pigment.  He also used an opalescent lipgloss - I think I heard "Painted On" ? (but I could be wrong) - he emphasised the importance of such a lipgloss shade that can be used in looks that need a more natural lip (worn on its own) or when applied on top of lipstick, for a more dimensional look.

***********************************************************************

RAW-FINED

RAW-FINED is about contrasting textures of mattes and glosses on a complexion that is mostly nude-looking - the looks created often look like touchable, bare skin, but have been nourishingly prepped which again, plays up natural feminine beauty. Think natural skintones, healthy skin that glows.

Here you can see the natural tawny shades used on the model's eyes and the distinct contouring along her cheekbones for definition and dimension.  Romero feminised the matte look with a peachy-nude lip, in MARQUISE D' lipstick, topped off with an opalescent gloss

**********************************************************************************

TERRA-COPPER

TERRA-COPPER is about modern gilded, bronzed visages - sculpted cheeks in honey and buff tones, lips lacquered in caramels and complexions that glow as if they've been sunned that require contours and highlights in all the right places. The end result? Warm, defined, scuplted looks that scream chic and not overly "makeup-py"

Here, Romero spruced up the model's nude eye with Superslick eyeliner in Marked for Glamour (bright gold). Romero mentioned that using eyeliners as eyeshadows make eyes pop and the effect created tends to last longer. The model was also seen sporting a deeper lip, glossy lip that made the entire look polished.

*************************************************************************************

MAC WONDER WOMAN

I mentioned that Romero used a couple of products from the WONDER WOMAN Collection during the demonstrations - here are some images of the products he used.  Since these were being used on the models and Romero was careful with using disposable applicators, I wasn't sure if these were testers and if they could be swatched - so I stuck to the "see, no touch" policy :P

Ok, so the moment I heard MAC was releasing Limited Edition coloured mascaras, I knew I was going to stalk for this collection (Ok, and also because there is a blue pigment, Ultra Marine). Sucker! I used to have a cornflower blue mascara from MAC many years ago and I loved it.  When I finally had more money and the guts to buy and wear them, they were no where to be seen.  This green looks like a bright vivid green (hopefully, it will not dry down near-black) - from the looks of it on the model, it looks like it might remain bright and vivid!

Some days back, Sophia, Sara and I noticed that in official images of the Wonder Woman Collection, the tip of the Penultimate eyeliner looked super-sized - more like a marker pen, rather than the slim felt-tip we've been seeing.  So we concluded it might be the way the eyeliner was photographed.  However, after seeing it in person, I think MAC really did super-size the felt-tip.

*****************************************************************************************

We also received a couple of Romero's favourite MAC products - these happen to be products that I personally really like and already use! Wheeeeeeee!

First up, Mineralised Blush in GENTLE.  I have a couple of Mineralised blushes like NUANCE, STYLE DEMON, LIGHT OVER DARK and I kind of regret not getting more of the first batch of mineralised blushes in the GRAND DUOS collection (those were sooo pretty!).

I have no regrets picking up the Superslick eyeliners that made their debut with the Fabulous Felines Collection - I also already have one in On The Hunt but I am glad to receive the 2nd one.  Its a rich black that dries to a patent black and stays on the whole day; the outer winged corner even lasted through some tears :P

I also really enjoy using the Haute and Naughty Lash mascara - I picked up one when it first launched in our counters here.  I personally think that MAC mascaras are by far the most affordable and really do deliver - they also tend not dry out in the tube as fast as some others

The brush creates 2 different looks - its only one brush but the smaller opening wipes off more mascara creating a slimmer wand for a more defined effect ( (DAYTIME LOOK) (top picture) while the wider opening, allows more mascara to remain on the wand for a more volumising effect (EVENING LOOK) (bottom).

Temptalia did a great job explaining the mechanics of the Haute and Naughty mascara which you can read about HERE

I like both effects but the Daytime Look is awesome for defining lashes and removing clumps - it separates and fans lashes out without dredging off all the mascara. And the mascara is a good, deep black, as you can see in the shot below

And finally, we have MOTH TO FLAME DAZZLEGLASS - its a neutral peachy-shade thats packed with silvery white shimmer and what looks like some iridescent purple-blue shimmer.

**********************************************************************

Hope you found the demos and trend information interesting.

Be sure to check out the link below where I feature some MAC looks and product breakdowns of each trend, as seen on the runway!

SHOWCASE: NEW TO THE CLARINS WHITE PLUS HP RANGE - NIGHT CREAM, PEELING LOTION & EXFOLIATOR (Tech Info + Textures + Pairing)

Jan22

Hi!

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend a CLARINS event that introduced 3 new products in its existing whitening / brightening range, WHITE PLUSH HP.

I've been using the older versions of WHITE PLUS products since I was introduced to the brand - I've always battled a little uneven skintone and post-acne marks tend to take a long time to fade.  As with all CLARINS products, the star ingredients in the WHITE PLUS range are natural plant, flower and fruit extracts that work in tandem to help create an even-toned, luminous complexion :)

*****************************************************************

WHITENING REPAIRING NIGHT CREAM

CLARINS studied the causes and effects of hyperpigmentation and discovered that DIRECT PIGMENTATION was linked to the UV rays our skin is exposed to during the day - but pigmentation problems don't stop there.  Pigmentation essentially sounds like an over-zealous worker, who toils through the night - the production of melanin triggered during the day, continues at night.  Other than UV rays, other daytime stress factors also weaken the epidermis and invariably hasten melanin synthesis.

MELANOCYTES deliver melanin to cells in the epidermis - the combination of UV rays + daytime stress factors hasten melanin synthesis and the melanocyte then distributes more melanin to skin cells, via growing dendrites.  Imagine the melanocyte as an open palm, and the fingers are the dendrites that stretch further and further like in a horror movie, rooting itself firmly in the epidermis.

What CLARINS WHITENING REPAIRING NIGHT CREAM aims to do is both slow down the production of melanin by the melanocyte and control the extension of the dendrites to prevent melanin from rooting itself in the epidermis cells.

CLARINS enriched their WHITENING NIGHT REPAIRING CREAM with DAISY and SEA LILY:

And after 3 weeks of continuous usage by a tester panel of 35 women in Japan, 97% reported smoother, softer skin while 80% reported a brighter complexion

As you can see from the 2 shots above, the CLARINS WHITENING REPAIRING NIGHT CREAM has a soft, whipped, gel-creme like texture - as with several CLARINS products, you only need a little as it tends to spread thinly very easily. It practically melts into skin and skin just feels soft - no greasy "moisturiser" texture.

Although it retails at SGD$110 for 50ml, you only need a small dollop for each nightly application so in the long-run, it works out to be a somewhat reasonable price.  Of course, remember to use a small clean spatula or a Q-tip to dispense the cream since it is presented in an opaque, screw-top jar.

CLARINS recommends pairing the WHITENING REPAIRING NIGHT CREAM with another sea-lily enriched WHITE PLUS HP product - the INTENSIVE WHITENING SMOOTHING SERUM for maximum brightening effect and radiance.

As you can see, the serum is also incredibly light-weight and absorbs really fast.  I know this for a fact as I have used the previous versions of this, even under makeup and it does not interfere with foundation or primer.  I will be incorporating this in my day and night skin care, in addition to my CLARINS PORE MINIMISING SERUM.

***************************************************************************************************

We can pile on all the serums and creams we want but its absorption and efficacy is not only highly dependent on its star ingredients - the skin must be prepped well enough to receive and lock in the nutrients of the star ingredients.  That is why CLARINS also premiered another 2 cleansing / exfoliating products that complements the serums and creams in the WHITE PLUS range.

GENTLE BRIGHTENING EXFOLIATOR

Instead of harsh walnut shells or apricot kernels, the Gentle Brightening Exfoliator is a creamy base with 2 types of micro-beads to both exfoliate and refine skin

The micro-beads are coloured red and are very small - you CAN feel them when you massage it onto skin but since it is a gentle exfoliator and I personally tend to prefer exfoliators that are a little stronger, I use this on very lightly dampened skin. Then I add a little more water to create more lather towards the end of my scrub session.

It contains GRAPEFRUIT, RASPBERRY and STRAWBERRY extracts which are known for their toning, brightening and exfoliating properties

The RENEWING GENTLE EXFOLIATOR retails at SGD$60 for a 50ml tube.

**************************************************************************************

GENTLE RENEWING BRIGHTENING PEEL

The GENTLE RENEWING BRIGHTENING PEEL is essentially an exfoliating lotion - it is based on fruit acids obtained from the Tamarind fruit that breaks the intercellular links that still connect partially separated cells on the surface - sort of like dead skin cells that stubbornly hang on for dear life?

Apart from Tamarind to eliminate impurities and sweep away the dead cells, other natural ingredients in the peeling lotion include:

Once you cleanse and dry your skin, apply the lotion all over face and neck and allow it to absorb.  It is recommended to wait at least one minute before applying other skincare products such as toner, serum and cream.  As this is an exfoliating product, it is meant to be used about only ONCE or TWICE weekly.  Over-exfoliating skin only strips and weakens it further.

The lotion, which is clear, feels a little "slippery" - I wouldn't go as far as to call it slimy or jelly-like but it definitely does not feel like regular lotion or toner. After trying it out, I realise it definitely takes a minute or so to sink in.  My personal preference is to use this at night - skin regenerates the best at night so clearing the surface of dead skin cells would help the absorption of nutrients from night creams and serums better.  Makes sense? :D

The GENTLE RENEWING BRIGHTENING PEEL retails at SGD$65 for a 125ml bottle.

*****************************************************************************************************

And while we're talking about WHITE PLUS HP products, let me share my love for this new WHITE PLUS HP product, PEARL-TO-CREAM BRIGHTENING CLEANSER.

LUSH. WHIPPED. CREAMY. FRESH. LUXURIOUS. SOFT. SMOOTH ..... these are all the lovely adjectives that come to mind when I use this cleanser - the product itself has this luminous look to it and when I massage it onto damp skin, it produces a rich, creamy lather *swoon*

And using this with my CLARISONIC = a cleansing experience like no other because my skin feels sooooo soft and smooth.  Slap on some toner, massage in some serum and night cream and huddle under the covers at night and I'm asleep in no time because I feel so comforted.

**********************************************************************************************************

The WHITENING REPAIRING NIGHT CREAM, RENEWING GENTLE EXFOLIATOR and the GENTLE RENEWING BRIGHTENING PEEL have just been launched in all CLARINS counters these last few days.  In conjunction with their launch, CLARINS has created a special WHITE PLUS HP WEBSITE which you can visit for more details and information.

I was also fortunate enough to have the CLARINS BAs and Trainers on hand to explain how these new products work and how to incorporate them into my existing skincare regime - you too can experience these interactive, complimentary, no-strings attached one-to-one sessions using the new WHITE PLUSH HP products by booking a CLARINS SKIN TIME SESSION. The CLARINS SKIN TIME SESSION not only provides you with a on-the-spot flash facial or hand treatment (depending on whether you book a 30 or 15 minute session), the BA will also provide you with a trial supply of CLARINS products that are customised to your skin type.

There's no such thing as a free lunch - but CLARINS will dole out complimentary advice and a trial supply of products ... and with a smile.

I've experienced both the 15 and 30 minute SKIN TIME SESSIONS which you can read about HERE - honestly, these are really worth your time as you actually get to experience the texture and scent of the products before buying.

And if you're interested in purchasing any CLARINS products, this weekend might be a great idea given that METRO is having its 20% Storewide sales! CLARINS products are one of the few that go on a direct 20% discount (i.e you get 20% off instantly).

*********************************************************************************************************

I'm going to put myself through a little experiment featuring the products I have showcased here - more details on that mini "challenge" in the review entry in about a month's time!

Have you tried any other CLARINS WHITENING or SKIN CARE PRODUCTS?

WOULD YOU BE KEEN TO GIVE THESE A GO?

Hope you found the information useful. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!

QWIC-PIC: WHAT'S IN MY MAKEUP POUCH? (Including swatches!)

Jan18

Hi hi!

Last night, I was engaged in a short series of tweets on Hello Kitty with Sophia (The Makeup Blogette) and Mag (Makeupstash) - Mag had found a bunch of pouches and stationery featuring an odd coupling of Hello Kitty and Elmo.  And after all that chatting, I remembered I received a Hello Kitty pouch for my birthday and decided to transfer my makeup into it.

Although it looks a little small, I somehow managed to stuff everything in - admittedly, I carry a little too much around as you will see in the shots below. Simply because I tend to add things in (mostly lip products and eyeliners), but never have the heart to take them out, until that lipstick or lipgloss ceases to be the "colour of the moment" :P

So I decided to show you how the pouch looks like and what are the things I currently tote around on a daily basis - I've never featured my makeup pouch on this blog before although a shot or 2 of it has cropped up on Twitter before, courtesy of my chums :D

On the zipper, I attached a charm from the SAMANTHA THAVASA Petit Choice range - I thought the LOVE ME tagline and the pink heart seemed to go so well with the whole frou-frou element of the pouch :) The charm was a lovely door gift I received from the launch event of Samantha Thavasa I attended with Mag late last year.

And here is what the pouch contains:

Here are swatches / close-ups of most of the products:

LIP GLOSSES

L-R: MAC DAZZLEGLASS IN JINGLE JANGLE; MAC LIPGLASS IN RICH & RIPE;

MAC LIP GELEE IN RESORT LIFE

*********************************************

LIPSTICKS

L-R: YSL ROUGE PUR COUTURE IN #4 ROUGE VERMILLION;  CLARINS ROUGE PRODIGE IN TEA ROSE;

MAC MATTE LIPSTICK IN TAUPE;  MAC MATTE LIPSTICK IN MEHR;  ILLAMASQUA LIPSTICK IN ENCOUNTER

************************************************************

LIP LINERS

L-R: MAC LIP PENCIL IN CRANBERRY;  SHISEIDO THE MAKEUP LIPLINER PENCIL IN BORDEAUX

*******************************************************

BLUSH

DIOR DIORSKIN SHIMMER POWDER IN POP DIAMOND

**************************************************

EYELINERS

TOP: KISS ME HEAVY ROTATION LIQUID LINER

BOTTOM: L'OREAL HIP CHROME EYELINER IN BLACK SHOCK

(If I'm wearing a coloured pencil eyeliner on my lower lashline and not the usual black, I usually throw it into the pouch too)

I usually keep my compact powder in the zipper compartment of my bag so I don't have to rummage through the makeup pouch for it (ok, there's no space for it anyway! LOL!).  Also, I usually don't touch-up my concealer during the day unless I've had a very very long day out (or I cried and it smooshes off under my eye :P) - the fluid texture of the MAC Select Cover Up concealer is easier to apply and blend for touch-up situations.

*************************************************************************************

So, finally I've shown what I carry in my makeup pouch! Ok, I confess that part of the motivation to share the contents of my makeup pouch is related to the mini-petition on Twitter that Sophia started yesterday - I've been asked to feature my entire makeup stash! That will come a little later, either in end March or early April (after I'm totally done with all my papers and presentations) when I have time to revamp my room :) Till then, this and likely a nail polish stash showcase sometime soon, will have to suffice! :P

What's in YOUR makeup pouch this week?

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week ahead!

SHOWCASE: THE LIMITED EDITION ANNA SUI TIN CASE NOW HOLDS MY STASH OF PEARLS!

Jan18

Hello!

I received this beautiful rose-laden Limited Edition keepsake tin from ANNA SUI. It is actually a purchase-with-purchase available exclusively at SEPHORA ION - ANNA SUI customers who make a purchase of at least $80 are eligible to purchase this keep-sake tin for SGD$16, while stocks last. Also from 13 - 19 January 2011 (2 more days left!), you can receive sample sachets of Anna Sui base, foundation and fragrance when you say the tagline "Shine Like A Movie Star with Anna Sui".

Incidentally, the ANNA SUI SPRING 2011 Collection is already available in stores - the ANNA SUI counter at SEPHORA ION carries only part of the current SPRING 2011 Collection but the full collection is available at other ANNA SUI counters, such as ISETAN ORCHARD. I swatched a couple of new products and one that particularly caught my eye is the LIP GLOSS R in shade 850 - CRUSHED GOLD (SGD$33) (unfortunately, I have no swatches to show you at the moment but I will update if I can get hold of some :D)

There are 7 other shades in this range of glosses that are formulated to create a seamless enamel-like gloss and shine on the lips.  In another range of lipglosses, LIP GLOSS C, there are 15 new shades - LIP GLOSS C are formulated to create a brilliant, translucent shine.

Apart from these, the SPRING 2011 Collection carries 5 nail polishes (SGD$24) as well as 3 Limited Edition blush duos (SGD$41) - I swatched all 3 blushes but I liked BLOOMING PINK the best

You can see some shots of the SPRING 2011 collection displays in ROUGEDELUXE and MAKEUPSTASH

******************************************************************************

Let's take a closer look at the tin, shall we?

The shape of the tin, the design of the handle and clasp remind me of the tins and keepsake boxes of the old days - it has this old-school feeling to me.  I really love how the bright yellow, pink and purple roses pop against the black background, accented by the bronze-gold vines.  Very girly and attractive.

I kept thinking what I should keep in this - surely something as pretty as this should house something pretty too, right? So today, I did a little "organise and neaten" job - I took out my pearls, changed all their individual pouches and ziploc-bags and placed them in the tin.  You might have noticed that I'm often wearing a necklace in a lot of shots (LOTDs and at events) and more often than not, its a pearl necklace.  Sometimes, I wear the same ones again and again cos I'm in a rush (or lazy) to rummage through the little pouches looking for what I want.  I think with my new storage, I'll be wearing a whole bunch of different ones now!

I usually clean my pearls with a soft cloth after wearing them out. Keeping them in the little velvet pouches is a good idea but really, when I'm in a rush (and worse still, have a specific necklace in mind), opening and closing all the pouches can be annoying.  These clean, clear mini-Ziplocs keep the pearl strands from getting entangled and I don't have to worry about lining the tin with felt or velvet.  I use the same type of mini-Ziplocs to keep my brooches and pins from knocking into and scratching each other.

And while we're at it, here's my current favourite necklace - I really love the lustre and colour combination - the shimmering peach, white, silver and peacock green have this luscious luminosity that I find oh-so attractive!

So thank you to the folks at ANNA SUI for presenting me with such a lovely keepsake tin to keep my favourite pearl necklaces!

**********************************************************

Thanks for stopping by and have a good week! :)

HAUL: MAC - MICKEY CONTRACTOR, STYLISHLY YOURS & CHAMPALE

Jan11

Hi hi!

So after being "starved" of new MAC collections for what, a grand total of 1 month (!!! LOL!), out came 3 new collections last week - MAC + CHAMPALE, STYLISHLY YOURS & MICKEY CONTRACTOR.  I looked through Temptalia and Makeup and Beauty Blogs and decided I would be sensible and good and made out a little list of things I was interested in and would check out and possibly buy:

So did the list work? Ummmmm ....

I will say this - I was with Mag (Makeupstash) and not only did I have an enjoyable afternoon with her, she also took her time to show me how beautiful some products were and how they could be used - I would have missed out on a gem or 2 had she not insisted I take a look.  So THANK YOU, dear Mag! *hugs*

It wasn't intentional, but in the end, I ended up purchasing products from all 3 collections - if I had more $$$, I might have given in to some other pretties (you mean more?! LOL!). Let's see what I brought home!

CHEZ CHEZ LAME SPECIAL RESERVE HIGHLIGHTING POWDER - So this was the "crumpled" powder that I was initially taken by and then decided I didn't need.  Then when I met Mag, who had already made her purchases, she gave me a peek into her shopping bag when we were in the restroom and there sat Little Miss Chez Chez Lame (wonder what it means), atop of everything else and glowing away and I gasped ... meaning I had to swatch it!

I initially thought I would like GANA from MAC + MICKEY CONTRACTOR.  When swatched side-by-side, in terms of shade, I found they were pretty similar but texture-wise, I honestly felt that CHEZ CHEZ LAME looked and felt better - smoother, more refined and I was left with a lovely glowy sheen as opposed to the frosty look Gana had.  Maybe it was the tester, but I was a little stunned that Gana had a hardened layer on it too (it was only abt 3pm and on the day of the collection debut!). So CHEZ CHEZ LAME stole my heart. End of Story :P

******************************************************************

LET ME POP and DANGEROUS CUVEE Paintpots - I wasn't even going to LOOK at the Paint Pots.  Then Mag pointed out how pretty LET ME POP was and one thing led to another, and ton-to-doinnng! I picked up 2! Actually, I was very tempted to purchase CHILLED ON ICE as well but seeing how I do have a couple of gold bases already, I let that slide.

Although I remember reading reviews pointing out how sheer the Paint Pots were, they didn't seem weak to me when I swatched them - I also like how they were speckled with lots of sparkles - sparkly bases enhance glittery eyeshadows!

****************************************************************************

MOVIE STAR RED CREAM COLOUR BASE - Again, I wasn't going to check these out but the display looked very inviting :P I liked how Virgin Isle looked but in my head, I was running through all the other cream blushes I had that were in that same colour family (like corally shades) and decided I could pass on that. MOVIE STAR RED is Limited Edition (Madly Magenta and Virgin Isle are available at PRO stores) and is a medium-dark pinked-red, as you can see in the inset shot below:

But when sheered out, it makes a lovely base for both pink and coral toned blushes - while we were experimenting at the MAC counter, I tried it both with NARS TORRID and MAC DOLLYMIX and it enhanced both the blushes. I really love the texture - unlike some other cream blushes that can go on patchy and require quite a bit of blending (like one or 2 of STILA's Convertible Colours), this went on really smooth and blended out really nicely.  It also felt comfortable - not greasy or sticky.

**********************************************************************

SELECT MOISTURECOVER - This duo of a coral corrector and yellow corrector was one of the items from MICKEY CONTRACTOR that I knew I wanted, right off the bat.  Orangey-toned correctors are not that easy to come by (I had to wait months for my MUFE Orange corrector) and the other orange corrector I know of by MAC, is only available in the PRO Stores.

Orange shades corrects dark spots and circles and prevents them from looking ashy under foundation - which is an essential for me. Mag also showed me how layering the Coral Corrector over the Yellow Corrector, neutralises blemishes.  This sold out really fast as I was told they brought in very limited quantities - I think I might have gotten the last one at Tangs Orchard ...

***************************************************************************

SIAHI and IVY FLUIDLINES - I initially only wanted SIAHI for its intense teal-blue shade but caved after I swatched IVY - such a fresh pop of vibrant green!  Prettttty! I have less resistance buying eyeliners because I use eyeliners quite a bit - both upper and lower lashlines as well as waterlines and I finally learnt how to control an eyeliner brush without leaving a jagged line on my lower lashlines so yay!

******************************************************************************************

MEHR LIPSTICK - Its described as a dirty blue pink; I like how it looks a little like a deep nude rose.  And like TAUPE, my other MATTE finish lipstick from MAC, this didn't drag on my skin or feel dry; in fact, in the inset swatch shot, you can see a little sheen? Even in Temptalia's review, she noted how creamy it felt!

And oh, while I was swatching the lipsticks, I realised another from MICKEY CONTRACTOR caught my eye - MOCHA which is actually from the permanent range (a deep brownish-coral shade) - while looking for it on the permanent display, I found yet another lipstick I liked - LUSTERING.  So we know what the next 2 Back-To-MAC shades I'm bringing home are! LOL!

QWIC-PIC: CURRENT SKINCARE ROUTINE (Featuring OLE HENRIKSEN, CLARINS, NEUTROGENA, LA MER & MORE!)

Jan11

Hi!

I've been meaning to do this entry for ages and things got a little crazy here - well, they're still crazy, but who can help that? I notice that during high-stress periods, my skin often takes on a duller appearance, looks a little crepey and I break out a little here and there - these symptoms are somewhat attributed to lousy sleeping patterns (and some days, I crawl into bed at 5am and I simply forego the night-time skin-care!) and too much coffee and chocolate.  So a good skin care regime helps alleviate some of the self-induced damage :P

These are the combination of products I'm currently using and I find that they seem to work well for me for various reasons. Let's check them out!

FACE WASHES / SCRUBS

LA ROCHE-POSAY EFFACLAR PURIFYING FOAMING GEL - This is essentially a very gentle face wash that is free from soaps / colourants / alcohol / parabens.  It came in a La Roche-Posay set and I enjoy using this, especially with my CLARISONIC.  It lathers up well and leaves skin feeling soft, fresh and smooth.  I usually use this just before going to bed.

NEUTROGENA VISIBLY CLEAR SPOT STRESS CONTROL DAILY FOAM WASH - This foaming face wash contains salicylic acid which is always welcome in my skin-care routine.  I use this on its own, mostly in the mornings or when I'm in the shower - I tried using it with the CLARISONIC but the foam got a little messy.  I think this has played a HUGE PART IN KEEPING MY FACE RELATIVELY CLEAR for the last month - I've not quite had to battle bumps and spots ever since I started using this.  I'm hopeful that this simple, affordable product might be the answer!

LA MER THE REFINING FACIAL - OK, I'll confess, I bought this sometime back and then promptly forgot I had it (how does one forget about such a pricey product?!).  I was intrigued by the entire range of LA MER skin care, especially the idea of the "broth" and the jewels in some of the products.  This is essentially a "resurfacing" treatment that is recommended to be used once a week.  It contains fermented acidic sea-muds, diamond dust and spun-smooth quartz to refine the skin's surface.

***********************************************************************************

TONER (DAY + NIGHT)

LANCOME TONIQUE ECLAT - I have been using this clarifying, exfoliating toner for a couple of years - I've tried a couple of other toners but I really like this - when I stray and use other toners, I tend to breakout more. This contains alcohol but its not so strong that it completely strips my oily skin; it also contains anti-oxidants, Rose de France and White Lotus.  Since I use this day and night before applying all my other skincare, I usually purchase the bigger size, 400ml, at the METRO Storewide Sales - this retails at either SGD$68 or $70.

As you can see, the bottle is empty  :( but I've got a new Ole Henriksen toner I'm trying, which I redeemed at Sephora with my voucher.  If that works out, I'll feature it soon!

*************************************************************************

SPOT TREATMENT (DAY + NIGHT)

LA ROCHE-POSAY EFFECLAR A.I - This was the other item in the La Roche-Posay set (with the face wash).  It is a Targeted Breakout Corrector and I must say, I REALLY LIKE IT - it works wonders OVERNIGHT on smaller bumps and pimples and I like how it has a thinner, lotion-like consistency.  It contains several pimple-busting agents like NIACINAMIDE, LHA and GLYCACIL to not only purge the impurities, it claims to prevent residual marks. I had developed a cluster of small bumps on my temples after using an ointment for headaches and the EFFACLAR A.I helped clear the whole patch up in a couple of days, with very faint blemishes only, which is superb by my standards.

********************************************************************************************

EYE CREAM (DAY + NIGHT)

CHANEL ULTRA CORRECTION EYE - This was a total splurge and I'm not quite sure HOW I convinced myself to get this but for all its worth, I do like it.  In the inset shot, you can see how light the texture is - a cross between a gel-cream and a serum.  It absorbs really fast and it works fine under makeup.  I use this at night too since I really don't want to open too many products at the same time.  I wouldn't say it has helped a great deal with my fine lines and circles but I'm not helping the situation with horrible sleeping patterns either.  After I am done with this, I will be trying out the CLARINS Defining Eye Lift and Advanced Extra-Firming Eye Contour Serum and hopefully have more hours of night-sleep (now that the exams are over)

*******************************************************************************************

LIP BALM (DAY + NIGHT)

CLARINS HYDRAQUENCH MOISTURE REPLENISHING LIP BALM - I recently redeemed this with my CLARINS CLUB BEAUTE points and so far, I find that it has really helped in keeping lips moisturised and supple.  I like that it neither feels waxy or sticky - it glides on and lips just feel moisturised.  If I'm using this during the day, under makeup, I usually apply the lipbalm on at the start of my makeup routine; just before I apply lipliner and lipstick (which is the last step), I lightly blot away excess lipbalm and then apply lip colour.

More details and close-up shots of this lip balm are available in this earlier entry HERE

********************************************************************************************

The above are products I use both during my day and night skin care routines.  However, in terms of serums and moisturisers, I use different products during the day and night.  Essentially, the products I use during the day need to be lighter in formulation - I have very oily skin and I tend to perspire a lot.  Heavy, rich products only tend to exacerbate the oilies and my makeup slips and slides when I have too much going on. Whereas at night, I am not particular about heavy (or even stickier products), especially since I sleep in an airconditioned room.

SERUM (DAY)

CLARINS PORE MINIMISING SERUM - I like using this light-weight serum during the day - applying this after toner makes my skin feel fresh, smooth and firm. Maybe I'm imagining, but I feel the skin on my forehead and cheeks looks and feels a little smoother than before.  It contains several natural ingredients that contribute to creating a smooth and refined complexion: ALPINE WILLOW HERB (anti-inflammatory);  DEAD WHITE NETTLE;  WHEAT PROTEINS (purifies and leaves skin matte);  CHRYSIN (slows down production of sebocytes);  LANTANA (leaves skin matte);  HIBISCUS FLOWER ACID (firming);  LINDEN (soothing).

*********************************************************************

MOISTURISER (DAY)

CLARINS WHITE PLUS HP WHITENING MOISTURE DAY EMULSION - I've been using the White Plus Range from Clarins since I got acquainted with the brand a couple of years back - this is one of the new and improved versions which I received after my Skin Time session at the first Clarins event I attended. I find that this is an appropriate day-time moisturiser for me - one pump (as seen in the inset shot) is sufficient to smooth over my face and neck; the moisturiser absorbs fast and well and it doesn't interfere with my primer or foundation.  It contains Sea Lily and Alchemilla, which protect skin against dark spots as well as Parsley, Raspberry and Camellia Sinensis Leaf extracts. It is also formulated to help even out skintone with continuous usage.

****************************************************************************************

SERUM and MOISTURISER (NIGHT)

OLE HENRIKSEN TRUTH SERUM COLLAGEN BOOSTER - I received this serum in my CLARISONIC set and I really really like this serum - the bright orange gel-serum smells of ORANGES! Like the drink Tang? Yummmm! This is one of the best-sellers in the Ole Henriksen skincare line and it has a high concentration of Vitamin C to smooth and brighten the complexion.

Like the serum, the OLE HENRIKSEN TRUTH REVEALED SUPER CREME, also contains Vitamin C and aims to smoothen and brighten the complexion - I decided to use this now, since I'm using the serum, in the hope that using them together will yield better results.  So far, I find the creme is actually sufficiently moisturising to be used at night.  As to whether this duo really brightens my skin - we'll see after I've finished them both!

**********************************************************************************************

ALTERNATIVE MOISTURISER (NIGHT)

LA ROCHE-POSAY CICAPLAST - I'll admit - one look and one statement of approval of this on Lisa Eldridge's blog and I was sold.  This is a healing treatment product for skin that is irritated, distressed or post-procedure (like laser procedures, cosmetic peels etc) - its primary aim is to heal, soothe and hydrate.  Lisa also recommends using it as a primer, especially for problematic skin.  I have so far not used it as a primer and have been using it as a night-time moisturiser, when I feel my skin is acting up a little - I like that I wake up to really soft, smooth and plump skin when I use this at night.  I feel that since this is chockfull of nurturing ingredients, CICAPLAST might be more effective as a treatment when skin is naturally regenerating at night.  I am curious about using it as a primer though, and I'll next try using it under makeup as a primer.

HAUL: LIMITED EDITION SLEEK PALETTES, SLEEK BLUSH in POMEGRANATE & STILA'S ADVENTUROUS IN ASPEN! (Including swatches!)

Jan05

Hola,

Thanks to Iris' orders at SLEEK MAKEUP and EBAY, I managed to hitch a ride on her orders and scored some goodies (again; I know ... and I wonder why I have to eat sandwiches).

This one, I'm totallllly thrilled for - it was one of THE Sleek eyeshadow palettes that got me noticing the entire line ...

*Ton-to-doinggggg*, the elusive GRAPHITE palette!!!!

I know, I have SLEEK's BAD GIRL palette which has some of the shades in GRAPHITE, like the gunmetal silver greys and one of the purples but this is an awesome smokey eye palette and I LOVE dark smokey looks just as much as I love my brights.  I like how a lot of the shimmery SLEEK eyeshadows look when applied; and often, depending on the base and the angle you look at them, you sometimes find iridescent shimmer in the shades (I found blue shimmer in one of the grey shades in my BAD GIRL palette which I featured HERE).

And next up, is one that is a total opposite of GRAPHITE - another Limited Edition palette, the BOHEMIAN, which is encased in a sleek white case.  As far as I know, only the Bohemian and Circus palettes were in non-black cases (Circus was a bright red case)

In terms of colours, I LOVE this palette.  However, I was a little apprehensive about the finish - out of the 12 shades, 3 are shimmery and the rest are MATTES.  I rarely use matte shades but the bright, cheery colours were enough to convince me. I've also seen several reviews commenting that the shades are well pigmented and not chalky.

Well, if I still don't dig the matte look on me, I can always change it up by layering iridescent shades or glitter to add complexity. I'll confess - that bright yellow is really the attention-seeker in this palette! My eyes automatically zoom in on that!

While searching for swatches of SLEEK Eyeshadow palettes online, I found one website that had good clear swatches of several SLEEK palettes - you can check out COSMETIC CANDY's review and swatches HERE

**************************************************************

I also picked up another of SLEEK's new blushes in POMEGRANATE (I have reviewed another of SLEEK's new blush in ROSE GOLD HERE)

Its a pinked-berry shade that looks almost a little metallic. It doesn't have that golden glow that ROSE GOLD has but it has the same smooth texture and there's no noticeable micro-glitter.

When I saw it in the pan, I was trying to think of whether it looks similar to any of my deeper pink blushes. Thankfully, there are no dupes or similarities in my collection.

Here, I've swatched all the deeper pink blushes / MSFs in my stash.

1. MAC AZALEA

2. MAC DOLLYMIX

3. SLEEK POMEGRANATE

4. MAC PETTICOAT

5. NARS OUTLAW

6. MAC SMOOTH MERGE (deep pink portion only)

I initially thought that NARS OUTLAW would be close but OUTLAW is much rosier and warmer than POMEGRANATE. MAC DOLLYMIX is significantly paler and looks more like a candy pink beside POMEGRANATE.

I'm quite pleased with how it turned out to be - several reviews mentioned it was a deep berry and some swatches almost made it look like a cranberryish shade. Perhaps my skintone pulls out the pinker tones in it? Either way, I like how it looks but I shall be light-handed with POMEGRANATE, since its a strong shade :)

***********************************************************

Apart from these, I also picked up another of STILA's Travel Palettes, ADVENTUROUS IN ASPEN.

I'll confess - both the Convertible Colours in this palette and the other one I picked up, MAKE AN IMPRESSION IN MOSCOW, were really not ... erm, impressive? Totally different in texture from the richly pigmented and good, solid feel of the Convertible Colours in the main line, these applied sheerly and felt a little greasy.  But for USD$10, the eyeshadows are really rather nice - they are smooth and rather pigmented and deliver a good pop of colour :)

In this palette, ICICLES was a little on the sheerer side and not quite the blue I envisioned it to be but I guess it can be fixed with a deep blue eyeshadow base.

Needless to say, I LOVE the antique gold GLISTEN and the sparkly AJAX!

*************************************************************************

Thanks for stopping by and see you soon! :)

EXPERIMENTING!: HOW I WORK A PALER BLUSH - FEATURING ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS GRADATION LAYER CHEEKS in 01

Jan05

Hi hi!

This entry is way overdue - I meant to post this sometime back but I was busy with school stuff. But in a way, the delay is good - I've been using the ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS GRADATION LAYER CHEEKS Blush in 01 fairly regularly the last month and I really do like how it turns out.

I love the powder and blush cases that Esprique Precious comes up with - the designs are very attractive and you can tell they've paid attention to small details. It has a little piece of plastic that fits over the blush pan so that the entire mirror doesn't get all murky with product.  Hands up, all of you who could not use a mirror in a compact because it was so unclear *kas puts up both hands* :P

The included brush is also very soft and feels good against my skin; it also picks up a fair amount of colour.

Here are some ideas from ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS on how to apply the blush.  You can use the shades separately or in different combinations to create different looks - how much you use of each shade can also alter the intensity of the look:

The CRESCENT MOON application, using the pale gold and plum-rose shades is supposed to create a sharper and well-defined visage.

The FULL MOON application (circular motions), using the pale pink and coral shades, is suppose to create a "fluffy and cute" impression - by which I think they mean a 'doll-like sweetie-pie' look :)

I like the fact that there is enough surface space of each triangular-shaped quadrants for a small brush to pick up individual colours relatively easily.  I also liked that all 4 colours were all the same size - in some cases, with blushes (or even eyeshadows) that have more than 1 colour in the pan, the different shades are also different sized and sometimes, the shade I like the best if often the teeeeniest portion! Heh!

***********************************************************************

Here swatches of each quadrant:

(Swatches are on an NC43-45 skintone, medium intensity and no base; swatched clockwise, starting with pale gold shade)

L-R: PALE GOLD (A);  PALE PINK (D);  PALE DIRTY ROSE (B);  CORAL (C)

L-R: PALE GOLD (A);  PALE PINK (D);  PALE DIRTY ROSE (B);  CORAL (C); ALL 4 SHADES SWIRLED

So as you can see the shades are a little light on my skintone.  Plus, my skintone tends to pull out the frostiness of the blush a little, maybe more so than on a different skin tone.  I notice this happens with paler shades - for instance, paler pink lipsticks, like MAC VIVA GLAM GAGA taken on an ALMOST MILKY shade on me.

But I love any blush that has a little frost or shimmer - it gives cheeks a real nice glow and instantly perks up the complexion :)

To work the paler and frostier blushes, I turn to my creme blushes to use as a base. The logic is simple - just like how we use coloured eyeshadow bases to intensify the colours of our eyeshadows, the shade and intensity of a paler, frostier-looking blush can be "adjusted".  In fact, its almost like customising the shade because with different bases, the blush can end up looking a little different.

To experiment, I used the following creme / gel blushes as a base:

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP:

MAC JUST A PINCH GEL BLUSH;  STILA CONVERTIBLE COLOUR in POPPY;

BOBBI BROWN POT ROUGE in PINK RASPBERRY

I first smoothed on the creme / gel blush and then used my SIGMA SS109 brush to apply the ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS GRADATION LAYER CHEEKS in 01 (all 4 shades swirled), on top of the creme / gel blushes.

And here is how the combinations turned out:

I like how MAC's JUST A PINCH Gel Blush plays up the shimmer in the ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS blush.

As BOBBI BROWN's PINK RASPBERRY Pot Rouge is a pink shade, it pulls out more of the pink tones in the ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS blush.

Whereas the ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS blush looks more reddened coral when layered on the reddish shades of JUST A PINCH and STILA's POPPY.

And in the shot below, I've layered the ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS blush (all 4 shades swirled) over NARS CREME BLUSH in CACTUS FLOWER (a watermelon-coral shade)

****************************************************************

Apart from this, I also realised that such blushes can be used in the same way as I would use an MSF or highlighter - to add a pop of shimmer on a deeper, intense blush or a matte blush even.

In the swatch shot below, I applied a medium-heavy swatch of MAC AZALEA (intensely pigmented, blue-toned fuschia pink) and MAC FRANKLY SCARLET (matte scarlet-red).

On the right sides of each swatch, I applied ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS GRADATION LAYER CHEEKS in 01(all 4 shades swirled; labelled as EP BLUSH) on top of AZALEA and FRANKLY SCARLET.

You can see the part of the swatch where the ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS GRADATION LAYER CHEEKS has been applied is significantly brighter and looks more glowy.  I feel it also adds some dimension to FRANKLY SCARLET, which is matte.

******************************************************

Overall, I like the ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS GRADATION LAYER CHEEKS in 01 for its versatility - instead of getting lost in creme blushes or in deeper shades, it adds a touch of shimmer and dimension and I get pretty pops of colour, no matter how I choose to use it!

The blush pan currently retails for SGD$38, while the case retails for SGD$15 at all ESPRIQUE PRECIOUS counters.

******************************************************

Hope you found this entry helpful and interesting :)

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week ahead!

THANKS FOR THE GOOD TIMES & NEW YEAR WISHES!

Jan04

Hi hi!

Just a little collage of some of the happy moments and discoveries of 2010 - there are many many more, displayed with great affection in many entries throughout this blog.

I've made so many good friends and have shared so much laughter and fun times - chums and moments like these are priceless and I can only wish for more such great times.  I've discovered many new brands and products, all of which give me immense happiness - a year or 2 ago, if you asked me about a Clarisonic or gave me blue nail polish, you'd probably would have gotten a blank stare from me. Half the fun is lemming after new collections, stalking them online and in counters and the other half is the satisfaction and happiness in using the makeup and skincare. Yeah, so my MUJI drawers runneth over but I'm happy with it, and that counts for a lot.

I'm thrilled to be part of  this beautiful circle and I thank everyone for everything they've been and everything they've done.

Here's hoping that the coming year, and every year thereafter, we will all be blessed with health, happiness, peace of mind, prosperity and beauty - inside and out.

Let's all make it spectacular!
